The Geological Museum was founded in 1937 on the initiative of Professor H.T. Karapetian, after whom the museum was named in 1943. Almost 900 collections with approximately 12,000 exhibits are distributed in the General Geology, Paleontology, Petrology, Volcanology, Metallic and Non-metallic Mineral Resources, Construction Materials and History of Geological Sciences sections. The exhibits reflect the geological structure of Armenia and the wealth of its lithosphere; geological achievements in Armenia; mineral resources, rocks, fossils of specimen of fauna and flora and maps of Armenia and other countries. On display is a restored skeleton of a prehistoric elephant discovered in a sand pit in Gyumri. Over 98% of the items on exhibit were collected in Armenia.
